Life University will be hosting the 6th race of the Georgia Cross Series. If you don't know what cyclocross is, check out this video on You Tube for a quick sample!
Cyclocross is a form of bicycle racing that typically take place in the autumn and winter (the international or "World Cup" season is September–January), and consists of many laps of a short (2.5–3.5 km or 1.5–2 mile) course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike whilst navigating the obstruction and remount. Cyclo-cross has some obvious parallels with mountain bike racing, cross-country cycling and criterium racing.
There are many stories about the origins of cyclo-cross. One is that European road racers in the early 1900s would race each other to the next town over from them and that they were allowed to cut through farmer's fields, over fences or take any other shortcuts in order to make it to the next town first. This was sometimes called steeple chase as the only visible landmark in the next town was often the steeple. This was a way for them to stay in shape during the winter months and put a twist on road racing. In addition, riding off road in more difficult conditions than smooth pavement increased the intensity at which the cyclists were riding and improved their on-the-road bike handling abilities. Forced running sections, or portage, were incorporated to help deliver warm blood to the feet and toes, as well as exercise other groups of muscles.
With this spirit of cyclocross, the race on campus will have several dismounts and obstacles, including steep sections, mud, and sand.
The race will be very spectator-friendly. We will have maps with locations marked for best viewing areas. Concessions will be available for purchase, but the race is FREE to watch! Bring the family! Come hang out on Sunday afternoon after your Saturday Halloween party, ring a Cowbell, cheer on the racers, and enjoy the music and (hopefully) nice weather.
Racing begins at 10am and will go until about 2pm. There are 5 categories of racers, all varying in length of race on the same closed-course. Feel free to come and go as you please!
Parking will be in the main lots by the crosswalk. Please park there and walk across to the Sports Health Science building and Treehouse area. Life Cycling members will be dressed in bright yellow shirts and can assist you on the day of the race.
Free Chiropractic adjustments by Life University Sports Science Institute (LUSSI) interns for all racers!
We will also have a Halloween Costume Contest for both the racers and the spectators! Wear your best costume and win a prize!!
More information will be posted as the race gets closer. Check back often, or see a Cycling Club member. You can always contact us at LifeCyclingClub@yahoo.com for questions, too.
